Privacy Policy

We comply with all laws concerning the protection of personal information, including the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (Act No. 57 of 2003, hereinafter the “Personal Information Protection Act”) as well as the following privacy policy.

1. Acquisition of Personal Information

We obtain personal information in the course of our business and operations, as appropriate to the situation, and in a legal and professionally ethical manner.

2. Purpose of Use of Personal Information

Our lawyers, patent attorneys, judicial scriveners and staff may jointly use personal information obtained in the following circumstances for the following purposes. Unless permitted by the Personal Information Protection Act or other applicable laws, we will not use any personal information for any purpose other than those listed below, without the consent of the person to whom that information pertains:

  • (1)   Personal information obtained in connection with the provision of our specialist services:
    Purpose: May be used by lawyers, patent attorneys, judicial scriveners and other staff for the purpose of fully undertaking services provided by our firm as specialist services.
  • (2)   Personal information obtained through hiring or human resources:
    Purpose: May be used for correspondence concerning recruitment, selection evaluation and personnel review.
  • (3)   Personal information obtained through inquiries to our firm:
    Purpose: May be used to respond to the subject inquiries.
  • (4)   Personal information obtained in the normal course of our business:
    Purpose: May be used to send items such as new-year’s cards and greeting cards, information about workshops, lectures, seminars and other events and specialist information such as publications and articles.
  • (5)   Personal information obtained in or in connection with any of the circumstances listed above:
    Purpose: May be used as necessary and appropriate in connection with any of the purposes listed above.

3. Provision of Personal Information to Third Parties

We comply with the Personal Information Protection Act and other applicable laws with regard to the provision to third parties of personal information obtained by us.

4. Management and Handling of Personal Information

We ensure appropriate management and handling of personal information through internal management procedures and education, and if personal information is to be provided to a third party, we require that the third party is equally subject to the same standards of proper management and handling of such personal information as applied by our firm.

5. Requests for Disclosure, Amendment, or Cessation of Use of Personal Information

If we receive a request to disclose, amend, add to, delete, or cease provision to a third party relating to any personal information in our possession, or if we receive (by contact details listed below) a notification regarding permitted uses of such information from the person to whom such information pertains, we will respond to such a request in good faith and in compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act after confirming the identity of the person making the request.

However, we may seek to recover costs incurred by complying with such a request, and we may be unable to comply with such a request if doing so is deemed on the basis of the Personal Information Protection Act or other applicable law to significantly impede the proper execution of business.

7. Revisions

We may, upon review of the status of our practice in relation to handling of personal information, make revisions to our privacy policy as necessary, without prior notice. As these revisions will be for the purpose of improving our handling of personal information, they shall, in general, apply retrospectively to personal information from the time it was collected. We appreciate your understanding.
